WHEN I SAY RUN, RUN!: THE PATRICK TROUGHTON YEARS PRE-ORDER
By Tom Dexter
It all seems like so long ago now, but when Patrick Troughton’s era of Doctor Who began on fireworks night 1966, nothing about the programme would ever seem quite the same again. The second Doctor’s arrival was a shock to the system, both as energised as he was whimsical, it didn’t take long for audiences to embrace him as one of the most beloved incarnations of the Time Lord.
As the sixtieth anniversary of Troughton’s début approaches, When I Say Run, Run! tells the story of what happened behind the scenes during his era of Doctor Who and tries to reflect not only the series itself, but also how the nature of television production was evolving around it. This was an era when Doctor Who’s production treadmill was a powerhouse of creativity, with a conveyor belt of monster designs battling against their greatest enemy – dwindling budgets and a growing sense of frustration amongst both the cast and crew.
When I Say Run, Run! takes you on a journey back through the past, when the scares were real and Saturday tea time was always time to hide behind the sofa!

9/2/25:
Thanks so much to everyone who pre-ordered When I Say Run, Run! – The Patrick Troughton Years. We wanted to give you a quick update on how things are coming along. The team is working hard to get the book finished, and while we’re making excellent progress, here’s where we’re at:
Shaun Russell has edited the first half of the book, and it’s now with Philip Bates, who is currently proofing it. The first half has already been laid out and is looking great. We’ll be printing the first page for signing by the author and artist in the next few days. Once signed, it will be inserted into the book during the binding process.
Tom Dexter is fine-tuning the final sections and plans to have them finished very soon.
Shaun is also working through the photos and editing the next section of the book over the next week.
We’re all putting in the effort to get it to you as quickly as possible, and we’ll keep you posted with updates in the newsletter as we get closer to the finish line.
Thanks again for your patience and support – we can’t wait for you to read it!
